GISTDA participates in the UN’s Regional Workshop for National Space Agencies and Coast Guard Agencies in Southeast Asia

United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) jointly organized the “Regional Workshop for National Space Agencies and Coast Guard Agencies in Southeast Asia”, 14-15 May 2024, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This regional workshop aimed to expand partnerships and explore/strengthen cooperation on the utilization of satellite-based sensors/applications for maritime surveillance activities among the Southeast Asian space and coast guard agencies.

During the workshop, representatives from Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center (Thai-MECC) and GISTDA, along with delegations from national space and coast guard agencies in the Asia, e.g., JAXA-JCG (Japan), BRIN-BAKAMLA (Indonesia), MYSA-MMEA (Malaysia), PhilSA-PCG (Philippines), had fruitfully discussed and reached further cooperation in capacity development and technology transfer on the use of innovation like the Radio Frequency Detection Technology (terrestrial passive RF sensor) for better maritime surveillance activities.

Earth observation satellite is one of the most significant methods to contribute to Maritime Domain Awareness activities, for example, maritime security and safety, marine transportation, fishery resource management, ship monitoring, oceanic condition, oil spill monitoring and etc. As one of the mandates of space agency, GISTDA has been effectively operating and providing these kinds of marine data/applications for a very long time. Furthermore, with the up-coming full operation of Thai earth observation satellite constellation “THEOS-2 and THEOS-2A”, the coast guard agencies in the region can get more exceptional benefits of both very high-resolution imageries, and specific sensor the Automatic Identification System (AIS)/Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), for the improvement of their surveillance missions, as well.

Most importantly, GISTDA’s regular participation in these specific space-related regional workshop, put a firm role and status of GISTDA as a Thai national space agency among international organization and global space community.
